John Edwards Abandons Presidential Bid

Momentum... every competitor needs it to win his respective race. Those who would try to win the race to become the most powerful leader, that of the free world, are no exception. Sadly, John Edwards was unable to garner and sustain enough momentum to allow him to remain a viable Democratic candidate. After a disappointing third place finish in the South Carolina Democratic primary, Edwards decided to end his campaign.
With his unwaivering quest to elevate the economic status of America's poor and ensure health care for those who cannot currently afford it, no one doubts that Edwards would bring back prosperity to the U.S. Although the issues for which he crusaded were of considerable concern to most Americans, John Edwards simply lacked the universal appeal embodied by his fellow Democratic opponents, Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. All three spoke passionately about the same issues. The final consideration has become which candidate is more capable of defeating the Republican rival and turning around the swift moving seven year downward spiral of this beloved nation.
Will Edwards be chosen as the Vice Presidential running mate by the victorious Democratic Presidential candidate? Many who are closely watching the race think that it is unlikely. It seems to be widely believed that John Edwards has no desire to hold that position nor will he be likely to accept such an offer. Popular nationally syndicated radio talk show host Michael Baisden suggests that John Edwards would excel as the nations next Attorney General. Regardless of the capacity, it seems unquestionable that John Edwards has a consummate desire to serve his country in the political arena. Make no mistake, John Edwards is an invaluable asset to this country.

No Shame in My Name
I was privy to a conversation in which a 40-something year-old woman referred to a 16-year-old young lady as a "little heifer". Taken aback, I decided to challenge her on the use of that particular word when describing the girl. The woman explained that she grew up in a family that used the word frequently. She also said that the use of it was not viewed as offensive by the family unit.
Well, I was offended. This was an adult talking about a child. So, I said to her that we, as adults, should be acting as role models for our children. We should strive to impact their lives in a positive manner. I asked her to allow herself to imagine the potentially positive outcome of her encounter with the teenager had she greeted her with a warm smile and a friendly word. While growing up, I always relished such treatment from women. It made me feel important simply because I mattered enough for her to take the time to acknowledge me in a way that uplifted me. Even though I am now 40-something, I still feel flattered when an older woman greets me with kind words and gestures. It is simply human nature to enjoy an exchange that caresses the spirit rather than bruising it.
To those of you who've read my humorous book and are ready to cry "foul", read the passage (and perhaps the book) again. The book is written in the vain of stand-up comedy and intended to make adults laugh. That bears no comparison to berating, demeaning, and belittling developmentally fragile personalities that are our children. Let's handle our children with care so as not to break their spirits and damage them beyond repair.
If you or someone you know needs a little encouragement to suppress the name calling problem, I'm including a poem to do just that. Enjoy... and call us all by our names!

No Shame in My Name
Most of us answer to the name given to us at birth
Never equating it to our feelings of self worth
But what happens when we are called by the name of something
we could never be?
The result is that it slowly chips away at our image inwardly
Whether accosted in public or behind closed doors with a name less than adorable
The use of such a demeaning form of censure is simply deplorable
A young girl being called a “heifer” during her formative years
Will most likely be left with the “I’m not good enough” doubts and fears
And the “B word” is bantered about so effortlessly
That its use easily survives through multiple generations of the family tree
We all know the names young men are called, so they won’t be repeated here
The devastating effects are seen in their lack of respect for self and
others… it’s crystal clear
Let’s raise the next generation of children with love and respect, starting now
Don’t allow yourself to refer to any woman, young or old, as a cow
Refrain from equating people to animals or words intended solely to shame
When you refer to yourself, speak to and about others, and talk to
your children, call each person by his name
Allow love, acceptance, care and understanding to undulate in your
tone and sparkle in your eyes
You may not see an immediate effect but it will take root in their
souls and eventually rise
In turn, our children will learn to treat themselves and others they
encounter well throughout life
Begin the process at home. Never treat the stranger in the street
better than you treat your child, your husband, your wife
There are no human heifers, no human female dogs, and no
fatherless male child who should hang his head in shame
We claim to want the world to be a better place… let’s start by
calling each person by his or her rightful name

January is National Mentoring Month
January is National Mentoring month. Parents, this is a great time to thank the person who is volunteering his or her time to help your child. If you are the child being mentored, you can thank your mentor as well.
Mentors, here is a Flower In Ink to help you continue to encourage and inspire the children whose lives you already enrich.
~Wishing you continued success and blessings.
The Star
If something could be said to inspire and encourage you
It would be that although life can be difficult, you will make it through
Occasionally, mistakes and other obstacles will block your path along the way
You may have a brief detour but from the right road never stray
You will not be told to reach for the stars but that you are a
star. It is your birthright
Within you is the ability to rise up and shine as brightly as
anyone else, regardless of your current plight
Define your vision, write down your goals, map your course
and take action
Eventually, hard work and diligence will bring career success
and satisfaction
It also helps to believe in yourself and to have faith in God
or the higher power you ascribe to
For when you hit a low point, your faith will restore your
spirit and give you purpose and direction anew
A word of caution… always choose your friends very carefully
They can bring problems into your life as easily as an enemy
While you are concentrating on achieving your particular goal,
Remember to also take good care of you… mind, body and soul
Although a great professional career will promote financial stability,
Good health can’t be bought even if you are wealthy
Know your strengths but work to strengthen your weaknesses, too
Know your worth for then you will know who is worthy of you
This is your life… of your future you are the star
You will go places… you determine where and how far

Heath Ledger Sleeps
Like everyone else who heard the news, I was shocked by Heath Ledger's sudden death. The first time that I saw him, I was changing channels and came across a movie in which I recognized Julia Stiles. Because I liked the other movies I had seen her in, I decided to watch this one, 10 Things I Hate About You. Although I had not heard of Heath Ledger, his character caught my attention immediately. Of course, he went on to steal the show. I enjoyed his performance in A Knight's Tale as well.
When the previews for Brokeback Mountain began to surface, I was not interested in seeing it. Actually, I wondered why he would want to portray that character. The reviews were so positive that I eventually relented and rented the DVD. Ledger earned every word of praise he received regarding that performance. Never did I expect my respect for his acting ability to increase, but that's exactly what happened. Still, I liked him most in films such as the romantic comedy, Casanova. It can't be helped... I'm an incurable romantic so I love endings that allow the couple to live happily ever after. Besides, the notion of cowboys being gay was a bit disturbing to me (no offense intended to those who enjoy that alternative lifestyle). It was heartwarming to know that Brokeback Mountain brought him bountiful love and a beautiful daughter.
Unfortunately, that was not enough to sustain him. There are persistent reports that Heath Ledger battled drug addition, costing him his relationship with Brokeback Mountain co-star Michelle Williams. Also, he was said to be suffering from fatigue, complicated by insomnia, during the latter part of his life. I think his fans would agree that these reports did not diminish our admiration for him. Here's a little something I wrote in his honor.
Heath Ledger, Superstar
Another blazing star has dissipated into the night… Heath Ledger sleeps
He is at peace while the world, stunned and saddened, weeps
You made quite an impression in 10 Things I Hate About You
Movie lovers fell in love with your acting talent, charm, and handsome
face, too
Your career took off, carrying legions of fans with it
But most would agree that Brokeback Mountain was
your break-out hit
In addition to increased fame, it brought you true love and
a precious daughter
Now, it seems as though the movie realm has sucked the life out
of you like the sun evaporates water
Though we grieve, we are still grateful for the phenomenal body
of work you left behind
Eventually, Matilda and scores of others will view your movies…

Check Yo' Self Thursdays with Poetic Genesis
Thursday is on the way. If you're looking for something to do, head over to Poetic Genesis' blog for "Check Yo' Self Thursdays". Genesis is a superbly creative and introspective writer. She's taking a look at herself to find out if she can improve on anything. Readers are invited to join her and check themselves as well.
Even if you do not decide to accept the challenge and post a message, you can sit on the sidelines and read what others have to contribute. You just might find a topic that you would have written about. Well, that is if you needed to check yourself on something. If you're perfect, then it doesn't apply to you. Yeah, I'm laughing at that one, too. Okay... it's only Tuesday, so that gives you plenty of time to think of your subject matter so you can jump right in on Thursday and post your comments.
Stop by Genesis' blog. You'll probably find yourself wanting to stay awhile.

Tips on Protecting Your Identity
Today, a newsletter from Military.com arrived in my inbox. One of the articles was about protecting your Social Security number and protecting against identity theft. You've probably heard these tips before, but they are listed below as a reminder.
Do not carry your Social Security card, passport or
birth certificate in your wallet.
Cancel any credit cards you do not use.
Do not share your Social Security number (SSN) when it is not necessary.
Remove your name from the marketing lists of the three primary
credit bureaus by calling 1-888-5OPT-OUT.
Request a copy of your Social Security Personal Earnings and
Benefit Estimate Statement at least every three years to make
sure the information in your file is correct.
Be aware of what is on your credit report. Obtain your report once
or twice a year to be sure it is correct.
A little vigilance now might save you some trouble later on.

Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a syndrome characterized by widespread pain and chronic fatigue. Patients describe all-over body pain (neck, back, shoulders, arms, legs, and joints) because the syndrome affects the soft-tissue and muscle, thereby encompassing the entire body. There are several associated illnesses as well. These include arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome, allergies, headaches (including migraines, and TMJ (temporal mandibular joint dysfunction). Patients can suffer from some or all of the associated illnesses. Difficulty sleeping, soreness and stiffness are problems as well.
My ordeal with Fibromyalgia began in my early twenties. Doctors do not know what causes this syndrome and some even deny that it exits. Those of us who suffer with the debilitating effects know that the pain and fatigue are extremely real.
I was sent a link to a post on another writer's blog with an article on the subject of whether Fibromyalgia is real (www.innthebasement.com). It related the fact that people with the syndrome are often labeled "crazy". The only thing that's crazy is that this illness ravages the bodies of millions, yet it is still not taken seriously because no doctor can take a biopsy and put it under a microscope for viewing. Well, that doesn't make it any less real, excruciating or tiresome. People with Fibromyalgia are truly suffering and need help.
If you'd like to learn more about Fibromyalgia, there are many websites that are excellent resources, such as www.fibrohope.org.

Keep Your Jingle Bells On
Remember those wonderful television families that rarely have disagreements and even when they do, the difficulties are soon replaced with sensible discussions followed by hugs and everyone making up? Well, in reality, most families are not like this and mine is no exception.
Since I tend to get rubbed the wrong way pretty easily by some members of the family, my sister told me that I had to wear my jingle bells during the holidays. With a puzzled look adorning my face, I asked, "What? Wear my jingle bells? What the heck are you talking about?" She replied, "You know, wear your jingle bells!"
Since that really was not an explanation, I questioned her further, "What exactly does that mean?" So, she went on to explain that the phrase means that when one is accosted by rude behavior that is irritating enough to cause one to respond with anger and hostility, imagine hearing the tinkle of jingle bells to remind you of the spirit of the season which should compel you to ignore the source of your irritation and remain calm instead. It sounded silly yet plausible. So, I agreed to wear my jingle bells. Amazingly, it worked better than I would have imagined.
Fate being what it is... unpredictable... a situation arose that, while sad, had the potential to erupt into an even worse scenario than the holiday season could have brought about. The entire family would be coming home for a funeral. There was my sister telling me to keep my jingle bells on even though Christmas had passed. Now, mind you, I am a nice person but I don't deal well with certain personality types that seem to be abundant in this group of people. I am direct and I don't dabble in shades of gray. Many people find it equally difficult to deal with me. Such is life. We all have our burdens to bear, as the old saying goes. Sometimes, the best way for me to carry my burden is to avoid all contact with the source of my displeasure. Consequently, I had not spoken with the deceased in two or three years. That said, I managed to navigate that entire situation without exchanging a cross word with anyone. However, if nasty looks were deadly, my funeral would be held this coming Saturday.
I had kept my jingle bells on! Because I did, I was unaffected by the blatant disrespect of the people who attempted to irritate me. I suppose they felt that they were paying some type of homage to their departed family member and friend because she and I did not get along well. Of course, they only had her side of the story. That's perfectly alright with me. Most of them (even the ones who are blood relatives of mine) are only acquaintances. So, they don't add or delete any value from my life. And, I kept hearing my sister's voice saying, "Keep your jingle bells on!" I had given her my word that I would and I did just that. Ultimately, when someone thought that he or she was slighting me, it only served to amuse me.
Honestly, people, there are so many families out there that are just as fractured and dysfunctional as this one. Although you'd love to get along with all of your relatives and their spouses, it's often impossible. If someone maligns your character to anyone who is willing to listen and take stock in that person's assertions without ever finding out the truth of the matter, that person should not be surprised or disappointed when you put some space between you and him or her. A wise friend once told me that sometimes you have to love some people from a distance. While I agree completely with that assessment, I think that the reality is that some people don't allow you to love them at all. It's their choice. All the rest of us need to do is keep our jingle bells on.
Someone sent me an e-mail that had several sayings at the end. It included these two... When dealing with yourself, use your head. When dealing with others, use your heart. I suppose that's a different way of telling folks to keep those jingle bells on. By the way, those statements were not attributed to an author, so I can't give anyone the proper credit. I did think that it was quite a coincidence that on the same day I decided to write this blog, I received that email. I didn't make a resolution for the new year, so I will make it a point to try to keep all three sayings in mind and in play but not just for 2008... for life. Anyone care to join me? Of course you do. I think I hear your bells jingling, baby! Peace and blessings!

What Soothes Your Soul?
A really good friend of mine called me because she had come to the end of a surprisingly dreadful day and she needed to talk. Butter Bean, as she is affectionately called by some of her friends, was more upset than I had ever known her to be. She was not the type to be rattled easily, so I listened intently to her recount of the day's events leading up to her despair.
The next day, I called her just to check on her mood. I was hoping that a good night's rest had lulled her back into the calm place I was so used to finding her. As soon as she answered the phone, I knew that I had hoped in vain. This time, I decided that I would be the force that would lift the burdens that had recently attached themselves to her shoulders. So, after listening to her for about fifteen minutes, I began making silly jokes. She didn't laugh. I allowed her to talk and pout and sigh. In the spaces between the talking, pouting, and sighing, I threw in a downright stupid comment and a nervous giggle. I had every right to be nervous because she still didn't laugh. The Butter Bean I knew had been chased into a hole and she wasn't coming out.
By day three, I was not looking forward to calling her because I just did not know what to say. Sometimes just listening works but I instinctively knew that this was not one of those times. No way! Butter Bean needed a jolt to shock her back into her usual jovial self. Undaunted by the fact that I had no clue as to what would accomplish that, I dialed her number. As the phone started ringing, a silly little ditty suddenly formed in my mind. When she answered, I broke into song.
Butter Bean, Butter Bean! Why do you have to be so mean?
Butter Bean, Butter Bean! Why do you have to be so mean?
You know that man was just looking out...
But you had to scream and shout.
Butter Bean, Butter Bbean! Don't cha be so mean!
Whoa, Butter Bean! Don't be so mean!
She was really quiet the whole minute that it took me to get that out so I thought that I had failed again. But as my voice trailed off, I heard a familiar sound. It was a chuckle. I had done it! Butter Bean was laughing! She said, "You'd better write that one down." We shared a few more laughs that evening. She reminded me to write the silly ditty down one more time before we hung up. Butter Bean knew that if I didn't, I'd forget it. I still forgot, but the lines above are what I can remember.
It really didn't matter what I sang. The point is that music was the one thing that soothed her soul. I should have known that since it has always been the thing to make me feel better no matter what had put me in a foul mood. The genre doesn't matter and I could care less who's singing it as long as I like it. Let me make it clear that I am a terminally devoted Patti LaBelle fan but I listen to a wide variety of others. So far, no one has come up with a song that I like to blast when I'm in a bad mood better than "Victory" by Yolanda Adams. After all, one can't go wrong when you have "the victory in Jesus."
What soothes your soul when life has unexpectedly dealt you a difficult hand to play? Maybe it's a day at a spa, a long walk, getting lost in a good book, a long soak in a hot tub with a glass of wine or a drive along a scenic route. Whatever it is, as long as it works for you without adding to your problems and it is not detrimental to your health, indulge yourself! I'm pretty sure that it will always be music that does it for me.
Be blessed!

Clash of the Choirs -- Kelly's Choir Cut
Say it ain't so! Singer Kelly Rowland (of Destiny's Child fame)and her choir were the first to get cut from the competition tonight on NBC's Clash of the Choirs. Kelly is a very talented singer and actress. Although her choir sang better than Michael Bolton's choir (no offense, all the choirs did really well), it claimed the fewest votes. Rowland, who hails from Houston, Texas, will get to sing with her choir tomorrow night. The competition is actually a fundraiser for charity that will benefit an organization in the winning celebrity choir director's hometown.
In addition to Bolton and Rowland, Patti LaBelle, Nick Lachey, and Blake Shelton are also bringing out the best in amatuer singers from their hometowns. One of the remaining four will come to the end of the road tomorrow night. So, stay tunned.
As a serious Patti LaBelle fan, I knew that I would be watching the competition and voting for Ms. Patti, a Diva in the best possible sense of the word. Like one of her choir members, I also dream of singing with Patti one day. She does an a capella rendition of "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" for the soundtrack of the Kyra Sedgewick and Kevin Bacon movie, The Woodsman. If you haven't heard it, you are definitely missing a great performance. Her voice is astoundingly crisp and gripping. And if you're a parent, you should see the movie. If pedophilia never frightened you before, it will! Here's a link for the trailer: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0361127/trailers-screenplay-E23472-314
Rowland fans can listen to her latest single, Day Light by clicking here:

I also like Kelly's "Train On A Track" on Jennifer Lopez and Ralph Fiennes' Maid in Manhattan movie soundtrack. Here's a link to the video on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiVPrwlzEL8
