For The Art Lover in You

On a recent visit to Raleigh, NC, I needed to burn some extra time so, my sister and I wandered into a building that was purported to be an art gallery.  We walked out confused and disappointed because we encountered very little that could truly be construed as art.  As we walked away discussing our observations, a young man was sitting outside enjoying the gorgeous weather and a salad.  He asked if he could help us because we looked as if something was amiss.

I thanked him for his concern and told him that we were fine but did not understand the "art gallery" that we had just exited. He jumped up with excitement, declared that he had a gallery and asked if we'd like to see it. We looked at each other and accepted his invitation.  As soon as we walked in, we were immersed in beautiful artwork that embodied what we had expected to encounter in the previous gallery.

Large paintings, obviously a set, in bright, vibrant hues hung to our left while a smiling blond, Dolly Parton, leaped from the canvas in front of us. The proud and profusely talented artist introduced himself as Keith McLaurin as he escorted us around the quaint home for his highly attractive works of art. I was struck by opulent depictions of Tupac Shakur, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, random abstracts, sports figures and even custom painted T-shirts.

McLaurin fell in love with drawing and painting after being assigned to draw a cardinal in first grade. He was unable to draw the North Carolina state bird so he enlisted the help of his mother. However, he was displeased with her "stick figure bird" and after hours of trying to draw one to his liking, he finally decided to simply trace the picture. The praise he received from his teachers motivated him to learn the craft in earnest. His best friend, Reggie Williams, taught him to draw and Keith has been a professional artist for thirteen years.

Years later, Williams' kindness lives on in Keith's life. The notion of paying it forward has not escaped this painter as he devotes a portion of his time and effort to mentoring children who have an interest in learning the art.  Parents make a small payment for art supplies but the lessons the kids receive each Saturday are priceless. McLaurin also manages a co-op of artists that includes Edwin Worth,  DEEZEEART, Anjuli Johnson, Mike Driven,  Anthony and Andrew Vaughn - a father and son collaboration, Rocky Reese, and Teresa Stephens, who is a photographer. In addition, he has been invited to travel to the Congo to create some of his unique art pieces that will be auctioned in New York in January to raise money for the Congo region.

Through his business, Pitch Media Gallery, Keith McLaurin offers custom painting services, commissioned artwork for Album/CD or book covers, body painting,  custom designed T-shirts and sneakers, and personal gallery viewings by appointment.

Join Keith and his associates on every first Friday of the month for a showing from 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. If you're in the market for a one of a kind Christmas gift, the Pitch Black Friday Sale might be just the event for you. McLaurin is offering 50 tickets at $50.00 each that will guarantee the holders an original painting (select pieces) from his gallery.

Pitch Media Gallery is located at 14B Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh, North Carolina. For additional information, email Keith McLaurin at swiftcream919@yahoo.com.

Rapping 7th Graders Debate Obama v. McCain

Seventh graders from the Ron Clark Academy perform "You Can Vote However You Like," a parody to TI's "Whatever You Like," at the Coca-Cola Leadership Summit in Atlanta, Georgia.

--
Lyrics:

Obama on the left
McCain on the right
We can talk politics all night
And you can vote however you like
You can vote however you like, yeah

Democratic left
Republican right
November 4th we decide
And you can vote however you like
You can vote however you like, yeah

(McCain supporters)
McCain's the best candidate
With Palin as his running mate
They'll fight for gun rights, pro life,
The conservative right
Our future is bright
Better economy in site
And all the world will feel our military might

(Obama supporters)
But McCain and Bush are real close right
They vote alike and keep it tight
Obama's new, he's younger too
The Middle Class he will help you
He'll bring a change, he's got the brains
McCain and Bush are just the same
You are to blame, Iraq's a shame
Four more years would be insane

Lower your Taxes - you know Obama Won't
PROTECT THE LOWER CLASS - You know McCain won't!
Have enough experience - you know that they don't
STOP GLOBAL WARMING - you know that you won't

I want Obama
FORGET OBAMA
Stick with McCain and you're going to have some drama
We need it
HE'LL BRING IT
He'll be it
YOU'LL SEE IT
We'll do it
GET TO IT
Let's move it
DO IT!

Obama on the left
McCain on the right
We can talk politics all night
And you can vote however you like
You can vote however you like, yeah

Democratic left
Republican right
November 4th we decide
And you can vote however you like, I said
You can vote however you like, yeah

I'm talking big pipe lines, and low gas prices
Below $2.00 that would be nice

But to do it right we gotta start today
Finding renewable ways that are here to stay

I want Obama
FORGET OBAMA,
Stick wit McCain you gone have some drama
MORE WAR IN IRAQ
Iran he will attack
CAN'T BRING OUR TROOPS BACK
We gotta vote Barack!

Obama on the left
McCain on the right
We can talk politics all night
And you can vote however you like, I said
You can vote however you like, yeah

Democratic left
Republican right
November 4th we decide
And you can vote however you like, I said
You can vote however you like, yeah

McCain: Clearly Not Presidential Material

Between John McCain and his running mate, Sarah Palin, spouting asinine falsehoods about Senator Barack Obama (terrorist, Muslim, untrustworthy, etc.), the racists are coming out in record numbers to McCain/Palin rallies. It will not be in the best interest of this country to go back down that road. John McCain is not ready to lead this country but he's doing a great job of dividing it even further. McCain's half-hearted efforts to put the genie back in the bottle do not fool those of us who have a brain and use it. Barack Obama is the only sane choice.

How The Candidates Did In School

Subject: How the candidates did in school...

People who don't know should know. How does it go - "Only in America ?" What would you do if you were a head hunter? Which of the CV's would you take the most interest in? The former or the latter? Although academic performance is not a total indicator of future accomplishments --- what would you decide? Please share this with your family and friends....Now, you are the Boss --- which team would you hire? With America facing historic debt, multiple war fronts, stumbling health care, a weakened dollar, all-time high prison population, skyrocketing Federal spending, mortgage crises, bank foreclosures, etc. etc., this is an unusually critical election year. Let's look at the educational background of your two options:

Obama:
Occidental College ( South Africa ) - 2 years studying Politics and Public Policy

Columbia University ( New York ) - B.A. Political Science with specialization in International Relations

Harvard Law School - Juris Doctor (J.D.) Magna Cum Laude, and also where he became the first African-American editor, of the Harvard Law Review

Biden:
University of Delaware - B.A. in History and a B.A. in Political Science

Syracuse University College of Law - Juris Doctor (J.D.)

McCain:
United States Naval Academy - Class rank 894 of 899.

Palin:

Hawaii Pacific University - 1 semester

North Idaho College - 2 semesters - General Studies

University of Idaho - 2 semesters – Journalism

Matanuska-Susitna College – 1 semester

University of Idaho - 3 semesters - B.A. in Journalism.

Now, which team are you going to hire?

Special thanks to T. Bailey for the email!

Hmmm...

This piece was emailed to me today. I don't know who wrote it, but I think that he or she nailed it! Thanks for the email, Michelle.

I'm a little confused. Let's see if we have this straight....

If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you're 'exotic, different.' Grow up in Alaska eating moose burgers-- a quintessential American story.

If your name is Barack you're a radical, unpatriotic Muslim. -- Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you're a maverick.

Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable. Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you're well rounded.

If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you don't have any real leadership experience.

If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you're qualified to become the country's second highest ranking executive.

If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising two beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you're not a real Christian. If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife and married heiress Cindy the next month, you're a Christian.

If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.

If, while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state's school system while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant, you're very responsible.

If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family's values don't represent America 's.

If your husband is nicknamed 'First Dude', with at least one DWI conviction and no college education, who didn't register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.

OK, we are much clearer now.

Barack Obama: Ready to Lead

Barack Obama Democratic Presidential Nomination Acceptance Speech

Barack Obama: Ready to Lead

History was made tonight…
Barack Obama officially took on the fight
To take hold of the reins of the United States
And to lead her back to her status of numerous greats

America was a great economic power
She had a great military ready to defend her at any hour
The old girl still has great citizens ready to roll up a sleeve
And rebuild her into a nation in whom everyone can trust and believe

Obama will lead the fight but he will not be alone
Joe Biden agreed to be his running mate, putting his experience
and ability on loan
In the Senate, Hillary Clinton, whenever she gets the call,
will answer her phone
And with the speech he gave tonight, Obama showed he’s firmly in the game
and he will play it to the bone!

Democrats like former President Bill Clinton and veteran Senator Ted Kennedy
have all converged
Demonstrating their support. And support from the undecided they’ve
strongly urged
Leaving no doubt that a willing, capable and necessary leader has been
found in this man
That’s why even Republicans and Independents are joining in the Obama
chants of “Change” and “Yes, we can!”

Hillary Rodham Clinton: Deep Tracks

Hillary Clinton at the 2008 DNC

Hillary Rodham Clinton: Deep Tracks

In your bid for the Democratic Presidential nomination,
you made quite a stand
Proved yourself more than a worthy opponent; had your say
But when the time came to unite a fractured party
You stepped up and supported Barack Obama in the strongest way

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, you are a political powerhouse
You met every challenge and exceeded expectations to become
a Democratic dynamo
Women the world over are still cheering you on
With well-deserved applause for the Hillary we’ve come to admire and know

You fought a protracted, difficult battle
And came closer to winning the coveted White House
seat than any woman in history
In the process, a role model was forged
That every female, young, old, or in between should see

Thanks to you, that ever present glass ceiling
Now has, in your own words, 18 million cracks
The ties that bind sisterhood are stronger than ever
And countless young women will be proud to follow in your deep tracks

Barack Obama... The Next U.S. President

I wrote this in February but never got the chance to type it up.

Congratulations on your Democratic Presidential nomination, Senator Obama!

Obama

I used to think that I’d vote for Hillary
But I think that Obama is the man to set us free
We’ve been held hostage now for eight long years
By overspending on a fraudulent war and exaggerated fears

No need to dwell on the past with the future in front of us,
bright as the morning sun rising
Of course, that’s Senator Obama… an intelligent, charismatic,
innovative, refreshing, strong, capable leader who’s enterprising
Barack has the vision… he shares Martin’s dream
To unite America… not have it separated by an economic or
racial seam

He wants to help the poor and minorities cross the great divide
With decent jobs, affordable health care, access to an education
and restoration of self-pride
“Yes, we can!” It’s Barack’s belief. It’s his motto
If you believe, vote for Obama! Put him in the White House
and watch America grow!

Barack Obama has inspired scores of young people to vote
And prompted those who can remember to reminisce on
a Kennedy, King note
He is exactly what this ailing country needs to heal and improve
With Obama at the helm, the United States of America can, in a
positive direction, turn and move

Barack & Michelle Obama

Barack and Michelle Obama are pictured enjoying a blissful moment while on the Presidential campaign trail in South Carolina. Democratic primary elections are being held across the state today. The entire country could benefit from a little bliss like this. Take it all the way to the White House, Obama!

Clinton Comes to Town!

Although it never rains on Suni Daez, the clouds can really put a damper on things. Illness prevented me from doing some important things this past weekend. That in turn has caused me to miss the appearance of the rock star of former Presidents, Bill Clinton.

Some people think that Hilary Clinton is making a mistake having him campaign for her. I think that having a rock star former President in her corner is a great asset. Use the hell out of that, Hilary! This country has gone to hell in a Republican handbasket. Hilary can put the brakes on it and turn it around. I only wish that I had been able to make it to any of President Clinton's appearances on his wife's behalf in South Carolina today. I would be hoarse by now because I would have been screaming louder than everyone else in support of the campaign that is Hilary.

However, I came across this hilarious video on YouTube that is just too funny not to share even if you are in favor of Hilary or Barack.
