According to an Associated Press report, after being held hostage on the high seas for five days, Capt. Richard Phillips was freed when U.S. Navy snipers shot three of the pirates holding Phillips captive. A fourth pirate was in military custody after surrendering.
Upon learning that their captain was rescued, the crew of the Maersk-Alabama cheered and waived the American flag. They were able to escape the pirates after Capt. Phillips bravely offered himself as a hostage.
Although this hostage drama has a happy ending, pirates are said to hold more than a dozen ships and 230 sailors from various nations. The pirates are threatening to take more aggressive actions by killing hostages if attacked by potential rescuers.
